Stunning Taranaki sunsets may be a result of Australian bush fires.

New Plymouth man Bill Herivel took this photo of the setting sun last Thursday and thinks recent sunsets might be looking particularly spectacular because of recent fires in Australia.

And the MetService's John Law says it's not out of the question.

"The system we have to the south has moved across from the Tasman and there may be some remnants of the Victorian fires with it.

"It is a great picture and it shows nicely the different levels of the clouds.

"As the sun has already started to set the lower level cumulus clouds are showing as darker compared to the higher level altostratus which is still reflecting the light from the setting sun."
