An alleged drunk driver crashed his car into a bank, left his passenger injured inside the vehicle and hitched a ride to the Urenui township to escape police.

Inspector Chris Tate, of police central communications, said the crash happened on State Highway 3, just north of Urenui at around 7.45 last night.

The driver, who is believed to be a minor, fled the scene after the car he was driving spun out of control and landed in a ditch.

He then flagged down a passerby and asked for a lift to Urenui, leaving the injured person alone in the car, Mr Tate said.

"He's not what you would call an ideal citizen," he said.

When emergency services arrived at the scene of the crash they found a lone passenger who had moderate injuries.

The passenger was transported to hospital by ambulance, Mr Tate said.

Police were still looking for the alleged drunk driver last night.

The person the offender hitched a ride with was now helping police with their inquires.

Mr Tate asked anyone with any information about the crash or the alleged drunk driver to contact their nearest police station.

Do you have faith in police solving burglaries?

Yes - there's no faulting their commitment.

Mostly, but they are under-resourced.

Sort of - depends on when and where.

Not really - clearly a low priority for them.

Absolutely not.

Not sure - luckily I've never been burgled.
