Six lads heading to a leadership conference in Washington DC have already started running to get there.

The New Plymouth Boys' High students are half of a group of 12 selected to attend the Global Leadership Conference in the United States in July.

The 10-day leadership course is attended by about 300 high school students from around the world and gives first-hand exposure to international diplomacy, builds confidence and enhances decision- making skills.

It is going to cost each of the Year 12 students $9000, which is why six of them have organised a series of fun runs around Lake Mangamahoe to raise some of the money they need.

With a poor turnout last week they're hoping for a big show of support this week for the event.

"We need about 6000 runners," joked Brian Aitchison, the man behind the idea and father of Liam, 16, who was selected to go to the conference in November.

"And it's a beautiful place to run around," said Liam, who doesn't actually have to run it but will instead work as a marshall on the two remaining fun runs tomorrow and next Thursday, March 6.

The 6-kilometre run around the lake is half dirt track, half gravel road and best done in proper running shoes.

Registration for the runs opens at 6pm at the Plantation Rd entrance and the actual running, or walking, starts at 6.30pm.

Cost is $5 for a student and $10 for an adult.

Spot prizes will be awarded after the final run and those who have entered at least two runs go into the draw to win a $500 voucher from Stars Travel.
