Two New Plymouth youths have been arrested for the theft and destruction of a Pukekura Park mobility buggy.

Just after midnight this morning, a 15-year-old and 17-year-old youth were arrested and charged with the Saturday night burglary, Sergeant Mark Johnson says.

The two are known to police.

Mr Johnson said the successful outcome followed the publication of the security camera photos by the Taranaki Daily News yesterday, taken when the pair were joyriding near the golden tree.

This  led to calls from members of the public. The calls confirmed the identity of the two who were already prime suspects for police, Mr Johnson said.

"The calls corroborated what we thought we knew. The publication of the footage and public response helped a lot."

Both youths were released on police bail. The 15-year-old to appear in the Youth Court on March 19 while the 17-year-old older will appear in the New Plymouth District Court on March 12.
