People are being warned to stay out of the Huatoki Stream after sewage was found bubbling out of a manhole this morning.

New Plymouth District Council staff were called to the site at the car park under the overpass on Carrington St where they found a pool of sewage gurgling out of the ground.

Manager of water and waste Mark Hall said there had been an overflow caused by a blockage in the sewer last night.

"People are advised against swimming for two days," Mr Hall said.

Signs have been erected warning people against entering the Huatoki Stream or collecting shellfish.

The signs will be taken down on Friday March 14.

Taranaki Regional Council and the District Health Board have been notified.

Should the media report suicide?

Yes, we shouldn't sweep it under the carpet and pretend it doesn't happen.

No, it's upsetting and a private matter and there's the danger of copycats.
