A woman who mistakenly thought she was on the Bell Block highway after leaving a nearby pub ended up crashing into the gates of the New Plymouth Golf Club.

The police attended the incident on Pohutukawa Dr on Friday night. The woman was breath-tested but results were not available yesterday, Acting Sergeant David Lee said.

The woman left Shifty's Sports Bar and failed to take the correct turn.

''She was thinking she was on the main road,'' Mr Lee said.

Pohutukawa Dr used to be the main highway but is now a dead end street after completion of the highway into New Plymouth.

The club's general manager Simon Rowe said the crash had wrecked the poles that hold up the barrier arms.

The club only installed a new padlock last week.
They were insured, he said.

''But hopefully she has too I'd like to think the club is not out of pocket for all the wrong reasons.'

Is high tea at a funeral parlour your cup of tea?

Yes, it's fun and even educational.

Hmmm, I don't object but it's not for me.

No, it's macabre and in bad taste.
