Plumes of black smoke seen rising from the New Plymouth suburb of Marfell this morning were caused by burning rubbish.

New Plymouth fire senior station officer Steve Dombroski said two fire engines had been sent to deal with the illegal fire on Banks St.

"I think they were burning tyres and things like that."

He said people needed to remember permits are required to light fires in town and a fire ban is still in place.

"You're not allowed to burn rubbish either," he said.
