Onaero's Waiau Country Estate's restaurant will close at the end of next month with a loss of 15 jobs.

Business owner Moira Irving confirmed today the restaurant would close, but the estate would remain open for functions.

Irving did not wish to talk to the Taranaki Daily News about why the restaurant was closing or whether jobs would be lost, saying it was a ''private business matter.''

The Taranaki regional councillor bought the business in 2011.

The restaurant's head chef, Troydon Waters was a member of the New Zealand Youth Culinary Team, which in 2013 picked up two silver medals at the Welsh International Culinary Championships.

A popular wedding venue, All Black centre Conrad Smith married Leanne Snowdon at the estate in October last year.

A Waiau Country Estate staff member confirmed employees had been told they would be made redundant "a couple of weeks ago."

The staff member, who did not want to be named, said about 15 staff would finish their jobs at the end of next month.

Do you have faith in police solving burglaries?

Yes - there's no faulting their commitment.

Mostly, but they are under-resourced.

Sort of - depends on when and where.

Not really - clearly a low priority for them.

Absolutely not.

Not sure - luckily I've never been burgled.
