A couple sleeping in their New Plymouth bedroom awoke to find a burglar in their room stealing their possessions.
Realising he'd been busted, Gavin John Terrill, 45, took off with the couple's smartphone, a driver's licence and laptop bag nicked from literally under their noses.
About 1am on September 24, Terrill entered the house through an insecure garage door.
He first went through the couple's twin toddlers' room before heading into the master bedroom, the police summary says.
Terrill was identified from footage reviewed on a neighbour's closed circuit security system and he was arrested a few days later.
The property has not been recovered.
Judge Allan Roberts sentenced Terrill in the New Plymouth District Court yesterday to 21 months jail after Terrill waived his right to a pre-sentence report.
