A man was attacked and robbed in New Plymouth in the early hours of this morning.

He was walking along Devon St East, between Eliot and Hobson Streets at about 12.30am when a blue vehicle, driven by a woman, pulled up beside him, Detective Sergeant Gerard Bouterey said.

''Two males got out and attacked him.''

He had a ''reasonable'' amount of cash taken from him, Mr Bouterey said. The 42-year-old man was injured and was later taken to Taranaki Base Hospital.

Earlier the man had been at Caltex Service Station on Eliot St.

Police are still hunting for the culprits and want to hear from anyone with information about the robbery or who was in the area around the time.

Will Aaron Cruden's omission hurt or help the All Blacks?

Hurt - he needs as much game time as possible.

Help - finally Beauden Barrett will get a proper run.

Hmmm - no biggie, just a temporary hitch.

Who is Cruden? I support the All Whites.
