A South Taranaki man died in the early hours of Sunday morning after his car left the road near Kakaramea.

Justin Edward Tama Fitzgerald, 39, of Patea, was the sole occupant in the north bound vehicle when it crashed on South Rd at about 7.26am.

Senior Sergeant Mike Hannah, of Hawera police, said the man was thrown clear of the vehicle when it flipped over.

Mr Fitzgerald died at the scene, about 1km north of the Ball Rd intersection.

Mr Hannah said an investigation by the Serious Crash Unit was currently under way into the cause of the crash.

It was unknown at this stage how long the investigation will take to complete.

He said police had visited with the father of two's family yesterday.

Mr Fitzgerald's body will lie in state at a Patea address until his funeral on Wednesday.
