New Plymouth department store CC Ward has delayed shutting its doors.
Business owner Roslyn Holyoake says the store, which she announced in July last year would close in March, will remain open until she and her husband Murray receive an engineer's report on the state of the building, which they own.
Yesterday, she said it would operate as a temporary clearance store and about a dozen staff would stay on.
She did not know how long it would remain open, or how long it would take for the engineer's report to come through.
The building, which has a category two Historic Places Trust listing, needed to be strengthened.
CC Ward, was first established in 1893 by Charles Cameron Ward.
The Holyoakes bought the store from Ward's sons 30 years ago.
