LATEST: Police have released the name of the man who died while fishing off the coast near Oakura yesterday.

Sergeant Bruce Irvine said the deceased was Roger Ian Maine of New Plymouth. The 66-year-old's death has been referred to the coroner.

About 1.15pm yesterday the vessel Spiced Gold, which was off Tapuae, north of Oakura, issued a mayday call to the Taranaki Coastguard after Maine fell overboard.

The Coastguard alerted skippers of other boats in the area who went to the Maine's aid while its vessel Todd Energy Rescue, the Egmont Coastguard's boat Cape Rescue and surf lifesaving IRBs were put on standby.

Senior Sergeant Thomas McIntyre said the Maine was dead when he was pulled out of the water.

It was not known how he died.

"It's the early stages at the moment, it could be as a result of a medical issue," he said.

The other vessels were able to assist the boat back to Port Taranaki where it was examined by police.

Police also spoke to Maine's fishing companion.

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
