A teenager who died after being struck by a car near Rakaia was lying on the road when the crash happened, police say.

Police are still trying to piece together the movements of 18-year-old Danny Mathew Hendriks before he was killed about 10.55pm on Saturday.

Hendriks was struck by a car on Acton Rd, just east of the mid-Canterbury town of Rakaia. He died at the scene.

Senior Constable Mike Jackson said initial inquiries indicated Hendriks had been lying on the road at the time of the crash.

The incident happened on an unlit rural road in a 100kmh zone, and Hendriks was wearing dark clothing.

Police had interviewed the driver and two passengers of the vehicle involved in the crash.

Jackson said inquiries were continuing and no decision had been made about whether any charges would be laid.

Police understood Hendriks had attended a function in Christchurch with a group earlier that day, returning to Rakaia in the evening.

Anyone with information should call Rakaia police on (03) 302 7009 or Christchurch police on (03) 363 7400.

Is high tea at a funeral parlour your cup of tea?
