Strong winds and heavy rains are expected to sweep through Taranaki overnight.

MetService issued a severe weather warning predicting the development of easterly gales, with severe gales gusting up to 120kmh in exposed areas between 9am and 6pm tomorrow.

Periods of heavy rain are expected to hit Mt Taranaki through to tomorrow evening, with a possibility of rain easing later at night.

A further 200 to 300mm of rain is expected to hit Mt Taranaki between today and 6pm tomorrow with 70mm to 100mm collecting in the lower lying areas.
