New Plymouth's house price sale record has been smashed, with a beachfront home changing hands for a whopping $2.81million.

The Hamblyn St house price easily beat the previous record, set little more than a week ago for a house on the same street, of  $1.85m.

Harcourts real estate agent Jack Kurta, who sold the home, said it was a ''superb award-winning home''.

The house, overlooking Fitzroy beach, was 350square-metres, and was designed by Tony Biesiek, owner of  Imagine Building Design.

Kurta said the sale price showed what a prime location could do for house prices.

The house was sold to a local buyer, he said.

Real Estate Institute of New Zealand representative Maree Gendall said the high pice was reached because it was a beach-front property that could not be built out.

Should NPDC sell its Tasman farms?

Yes, and use the money for local projects.

No, the farms are a good long-term investment.

Sell a portion of them.

Not sure.

Don't care either way.
