A fisherman was winched off his boat at sea by helicopter this morning.
The Taranaki Community Rescue Helicopter and a St John paramedic travelled 12 kilometres off the coast from Manaia to pick up the man.
Helicopter crewman Jayden Strickland said there was an estimated sea swell of four metres and crew judgment was essential for a safe rescue.
The fisherman had a medical condition that had worsened overnight.
He was taken to Taranaki Base Hospital.
