LATEST: Police are speaking to the hunter involved in a shooting near Taupo last night which left his companion critically injured.

A decision has yet to be made on whether or not he will face charges, said Detective Sergeant Tony Manunui.

The men were hunting rabbits in Lake Taupo Forest, 25km southeast of Taupo, about 10.20pm when the 69-year-old was shot in the chest.

He remains in Waikato Hospital's intensive care unit.
