Plea for pohutukawa

What helps to make Waitara special is its river and its history, including Borthwicks. The row of pohutakawa which line the river are an integral part of that history.

Their Christmas flowering is a joy each year.

I do hope that before the Taranaki Regional Council plans to remove most of them get any further, that expert advice will be sought on whether they are a problem with regard to flood protection.

There is outside expertise available on pohutakawa and I would not want to rely on some TRC wallah's opinion that these magnificent specimens are expendable, ''past their use-by date'' and easily replaced.

Our town will look a bleak and sad little place if these handsome and long-lived trees are removed.
