The demolition of Hawera's Egmont Tavern in October
1983, began with workers removing the roof. Demolition would be completed by December 9 and
within a week of that date Fletcher Development and Construction Ltd would begin construction of
the bank, to be leased by Westpac Banking Corporation.

Fifty years of overhead power lines in High Street,
Hawera, came to an end in June 1987. The Egmont Electric Power Board spent a week putting the
cables underground in the northern end of the street.
