New Plymouth Old Boys moved back to the top of the Taranaki premier rugby table this afternoon after they defeated Southern 46-29 at Hawera.

Although the margin appeared comfortable, Old Boys had to come from 22-17 down at the break to take the bonus point victory.

Old Boys No 8 Jonno Crossan had a day to remember, scoring a hat-trick of tries.

Previous leaders Tukapa dropped from first to fifth after they were thumped 29-3 by Coastal at Rahotu.

Coastal outplayed Tukapa in most areas of the game and showed more discipline at the breakdown.

The return of No 8 Kelvin Weir and hooker Mitchell Campbell helped the home side as they dominated up front.

Clifton fullback Beaudein Waaka scored a last minute try and kicked a conversion from out wide to earn his side a 22-22 draw with Inglewood at Tikorangi.

The draw, and the subsequent two competition points, kept Clifton's chances of making the top four alive, although they now trail fourth placed Coastal by four points.

Spotswood United's excellent recent form continued when they thrashed bottom-placed Stratford 81-3 at Yarrow Stadium.

Taranaki wing Waisake Naholo enjoyed his afternoon, scoring a hat-trick of tries as Spotswood United moved up to second on the table.
