HIGHER HONOURS: New Plymouth Girls’ High School defender Kelly Jury has been snapped up by Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic for next year’s trans-Tasman netball league.

Kelly Jury should have been jumping for joy yesterday.

But there was none of that, even though the 17-year-old had every reason to be celebrating.

Instead of rushing around celebrating her selection in the 12-strong Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic squad for next year's trans-Tasman netball league, the 1.92m defender had her foot up at home after injuring her right calf in the opening seconds of Thursday night's premier two netball grand final. "I only found out this week. There were no trials . . . It was kind of out of the blue," she said last night.

Jury has been on the national radar making the 16-strong New Zealand secondary schools' squad earlier this year.

"But I didn't make the final cut of 12 for the trans-Tasman tournament in Adelaide. But I played for the Aotearoa Maori secondary schools side at the tournament."

Jury intends studying at Waikato University next year.

"I haven't decided what yet, something related to sport."
