Five Taranaki teams chase volleyball titles

Five Taranaki teams are competing in the 42nd New Zealand secondary schools' indoor volleyball championships starting in Palmerston North this morning.

A total of 140 teams – 76 girls and 64 boys – have entered this year's event to be played over five days.

The Taranaki qualifiers for the Honours grades are Spotswood College boys and New Plymouth Girls' High School who will compete in the top 32 division.

In pool play, Spotswood will play Tauranga Boys' College A, Riccarton High School (Christchurch) and Bayfield High School (Dunedin), while New Plymouth will play Mangere College, Matamata College and Marlborough Girls' College.

In the premier grade for teams ranked from 33-64, Spotswood will play Otumoetai College B (Tauranga), St Kentigern's College (Auckland), and St Hilda's (Dunedin), with New Plymouth Boys' High School playing Long Bay College (North Harbour), Kamo HS (Northland) and Freyberg HS (Palmerston North).

The New Plymouth Girls' High School B team will compete in the Challenger grade for teams ranked 65-76. New Plymouth will play Orewa College, Glendowie College (Auckland), Otago Girls', Freyberg HS and Howick College.

Pool play finishes tomorrow, with finals scheduled for Friday afternoon.
