Beauden Barrett returns to first five-eighth amid five changes to the Hurricanes starting lineup to face the Melbourne Rebels in Wellington on Saturday.

Coach Mark Hammett had toyed with shifting Barrett to fullback and his Taranaki team-mate Andre Taylor to the right wing to fill the gap created by Cory Jane's ankle injury, but instead restored Barrett to his familiar spot.

He swaps places with Tusi Pisi, who returns to the Hurricanes' bench after starting the 37-25 defeat to the Brumbies last Friday.

Alapati Leiua claims Jane's No 14 jersey, with the All Blacks winger expected to be sidelined for six weeks with a sprained ankle.

In the forwards, Jack Lam replaces injured openside flanker Karl Lowe (knee), Faifili Levave reclaims the No 6 jersey from All Blacks training squad callup Brad Shields, and prop Jeffery Toomaga-Allen returns for Reg Goodes.

The Hurricanes (6-6) are ninth on the Super Rugby ladder while the Rebels (4-7) are 10th, after their 32-31 win over the Force in Perth on Sunday.

HURRICANES: Andre Taylor, Alapati Leiua, Conrad Smith (c), Tim Bateman, Julian Savea, Beauden Barrett, TJ Perenara, Victor Vito, Jack Lam, Faifili Levave, Jason Eaton, Jeremy Thrush, Jeffery Toomaga-Allen, Dane Coles, Ben May. Reserves: Motu Matu'u, Reg Goodes, James Broadhurst, Brad Shields, Chris Eaton, Tusi Pisi, Jayden Hayward. Fairfax NZ
