Waverley's George Smith had the best net score at the Taranaki Eagles under-17 golf tournament at the Manaia course last Friday.
Smith, playing off a 29 handicap, finished with a net 62. New Plymouth's Fletcher Broderick (73-7-66) finished second with Charlie Boon (77-8-69) from Waverley third.
Manaia's Celeste McLean (74-5-69) won the girls' title, with clubmates Tineka Kumeroa (90-20-70) second and Holly Winter (76-4-72) third.
The boys' nine-hole section was won by New Plymouth's Max Shearer with a score of 57 followed by Ricco Waite (Westown) on 58 and Josh Vanner (Manaia) on 61.
The girls' nine-hole section was won by Manaia's Sian Joll with a score of 56 followed by the Manaia duo of Madison McLean and Chelsea Kumeroa on 70.
The trio of Fletcher Broderick (New Plymouth), Charlie Boon (Waverley) and Celeste McLean (Manaia) will represent Taranaki at the New Zealand Eagles under-17 championship at the Richmond Golf Club in Nelson from September 1-3.
A squad of 12 junior golfers from the Taranaki Junior Golf Society competed against their Waikato and Bay of Plenty counterparts at the Matamata Golf Club on Sunday.
The Taranaki boys' team lost to Waikato (average net score 76.17 to 74.88), while the girls' team beat Waikato (75 to 78) and the Taranaki team lost to Bay of Plenty (75.32 to 74.8).
The leading Taranaki scores were: Gross fourth overall, Ben Joseph, Fletcher Broderick, Sam Jones all 76 (par 71); boys' net, Joe Conley 84-19-65; girls, junior section, Caitlin Reardon 118-43-75, 2nd.
The Taranaki District Seniors men's monthly button was won by Fitzroy's Trevor Coleman with 44 stableford points, while Stratford's Ann Braithwaite took out the women's button with 39 points at the Eltham Golf Club.
Other leading scores: Senior, Alan McKay 41, Marty Reeves 39, Irvine Marr 39; intermediate, Warren Hooper 38, Colin Wheeler 38, Colin Carpinter 38; junior, Ray Reitzema 40, Ron Scott 39, Lou Ramsdale 37; women, Diane Morressy 38, Tui Steele 37.
The next seniors' event on August 13 will now be held at Kaitake.
Seventeen players competed at the Patea Golf Club's qualifying event for the Versatill Taranaki Top Club competition on Saturday.
The four qualifiers from the 18-hole stableford competition for the Taranaki final were: Senior men, Aaron Hughes 32; intermediate, Ray Finlay 39; junior, Graeme Kempton 37; women, Win Finlay 35.
The Taranaki Golf Rules Association is running a rules course which will start in August and run through to November.

While on the subject of rules, after entering the wrong Haszard last week, my apologies to Julian Haszard who claimed his first championship title in winning the New Plymouth Golf Club's junior men's matchplay title beating Mike Wildermoth on the 37th hole.
