New Plymouth Boys' High School's first XI hockey team lead their pool after the first day of the India Shield secondary schools tournament at Pukekohe.

Boys' High thrashed Rotorua Boys' High School 6-0 in the first round, with Dean Lobb scoring a hat-trick. In the afternoon, Boys' High beat the Auckland Secondary Schools' champions St Kentigern College 3-2.

Today, New Plymouth play Whangarei BHS.

Meanwhile, in Stratford, Francis Douglas Memorial College is hoping to bounce back after two losses yesterday in the  Mayhill Cup secondary schoolboys' tournament.

Francis Douglas lost to Gisborne Boys' High School 2-1, with Harrison Smith scoring for Francis Douglas. And last night the side lost again, 8-1 to pool favourite Pukekohe High School. They play Otumoetai College today.
