Big win keeps Taranaki in the hunt

Taranaki scored an important 5-0 win over Poverty Bay-East Coast to keep their title hopes alive at the Freyberg Masters golf tournament at the Maraenui course in Napier yesterday.

Taranaki are in fifth spot heading into the final four rounds with two wins, a loss and a draw.

Waikato remain the only unbeaten team, while Wellington, Canterbury and Auckland have all lost one game.

Brian Rowland nailed the first win, downing Brent Colbert 3 and 1 at No 5, with Robbie Sim, at No 4, winning 2-up over Neville West.

Playing at No 3, Brian Martelletti edged out Tene Goldsmith 1-up, while Tony Hardy beat Peter Clayton 3 and 2 in the battle between the two No 2s.

At the top of the order, Aarun Langton beat Wynn MacLennan 3 and 2 to complete the clean sweep.

Today Taranaki play Bay of Plenty in the morning and then taken on Wellington in the afternoon.

Taranaki's final two games tomorrow are against Waikato and Tasman.
