New Plymouth's Phil Hulse won the Taranaki Recreational Cycling Club's first race in the George Wharehoka Memorial points series on Sunday.

Hulse mastered the wet and windy conditions over the two-lap Egmont/Lepper roads circuit. Riding from the eight- minute mark, Hulse won by one second in 54min 14sec from limit rider Wally Brown (1hr 2min 15sec) with a flying Blair Cox, from the scratch mark, taking fastest time in 48min 5sec.
