A new Splash and Dash series will provide triathletes with some leadup races for next February's New Plymouth half ironman.
The Splash and Dash series, which starts on December 6, will be held over two distances - a shorter race involving a 500m swim and a 2km run and a longer race over 1000m and 4km.
"There will be six races in the series, all on Thursday nights over the summer," said organiser Selwyn Brown.
"Entry fee for each event is $5, with $4500 worth of prizes up for grabs over the series. Points will be awarded for the first 12 men and women in each race, with an overall winner in each category."
Brown, along with leading New Zealand triathlete Clark Ellice and triathlon coach Graham Park, are organising the series.
"We're looking at this as a lead into the Wells New Plymouth half ironman on February 9, and as a way for people to get into the sport," he said. The dates are: December 6 and 20, January 10and 24 and February 14 and 28.
