Francis Douglas Memorial College had a tough time of it at the national secondary schools sevens tournament in Auckland yesterday.

A 26-12 first-up loss to Rotorua Boys' High School was followed by a heart-breaking 24-19 loss to Hamilton Boys' High School after the final hooter had sounded.

A third loss in group play, 17-10 to Otago Boys' High School, pushed the New Plymouth side into the shield section.

They made the final but lost 17-12 to Westlake Boys' High School. Kelston won the tournament for a second year running.
