Wellington Saints coach and former Tall Black Pero Cameron will be back for next month's Five Star summer fun basketball camp in New Plymouth.
Cameron will be joined again by former NBL players Daryn Shaw, Willie Banks, Pete Knechtel and Matt Cleaver for the three-day camp at the TSB Stadium from January 21 to 23. Knechtel, who organised the first camp earlier this year, said it was aimed at players aged nine to 18.
"We've lowered the age this year from 12 to nine," Knechtel said. "We saw a real need for younger players, those at intermediate school. Last year we had 70 at the camp, this year we're hoping for 100."
Knechtel said the camp was a lot of fun.
"It's something for all the kids in Taranaki. We cater for players of all abilities, from first time basketballers to very talented players. There's something for everyone."
Knechtel said the morning sessions involved half hour sessions with each of the coaches covering all the basics such as dribbling, shooting, rebounding and defence.
"In the afternoon, it's more about fun and games. Applying what they've learnt in the mornings."
Knechtel said the cost of the camp was $155, which included lunches, a T-shirt and a basketball.
"Similar camps in Wellington cost more than $200. We're trying to make it affordable for parents. It's more about making it a fun experience for the kids and sharing some knowledge than making money."
