Oeo's James Murphy rode to a dominant solo victory at the Hawera Cycling Club's Mountain Road handicap on Saturday.
The 34-year-old farmer rode the final 20km alone to win by 1 min 12s over Hawera's Janice McCallum and an eight-man chase group at the finish line in Normanby.
Local veteran Peter Schrafft again rounded out the podium for third place after breaking away on the final ascent of the Old Mountain Rd before dropping into Normanby.
Murphy's win came on top of hard triathlon training where the aim was to get more miles in.
"I was not really thinking about winning the race I was just going for a hard day in the saddle. With the gap at 30 seconds I was trying to take it second by second and not to push it right away to one minute. It was the best way to save my effort and put all my strength into the 20km in front of me," said Murphy.
New Plymouth senior Darry Stevens again demonstrated his form to take fastest time after breaking away from fellow scratch-men Vaughan Smith and Mike Lock in the latter stages of the 48km race.
Handicap: James Murphy 1hr 31min 57s, 1; Janice McCallum 1:33.09, 2; Peter Schrafft 1:22.12, 3
Fastest times: Darry Stevens 1hr 17min 05s, 1; Vaughan Smith 1:18.17, 2; Mike Lock 1:20.01, 3.
