Christmas shopping was off the list of things to do yesterday for many of Taranaki's top surf lifesavers.
More than 50 took part in the East End Surf lifesaving carnival at New Plymouth's Ngamotu and East End beaches. A highlight of the day being the ski, canoe and boat racing from Ngamotu to East End.
The canoe race was won by New Plymouth Old Boys from East End, with East End beating Fitzroy in the boat race. Fitzroy's Adam Fraser won the ski race ahead of clubmate Ron Cole and East End's Wayne Howarth. The open women's ski race was won by Fitzroy's Katie Watts.
The carnival continued at East End with board, board relay, ski, ski relay, run-swim-run and short-course canoe and boat races.
Fitzroy won the carnival with 307 points, with Old Boys second on 229 and east End third on 88.
