Fitzroy golfer Brian Rowland has had a sizzling start to the year.
After seven rounds on his home course, the one-handicapper is eight under par.
His best round of 62 - six under par - was just one stroke off equalling the record of 61 held by Jamie Reid. Rowland's worst score - if you could call it that - is a four-over 72.
Rowland said he knew the course record was there for the taking and a 59 was possible.
"I got the shakes on a short putt on the 16th," he said.
"I missed the green and chipped to about 18 inches but missed the putt. Then I bogeyed the par three 17th."
He finished in style with a birdie four on the par-five 18th. He was on the back of the green after a driver and five iron but his eagle putt lipped out leaving him a tap-in birdie.
His run started with two rounds of 70, followed by two of 65, a 72, a 62 and a four-under par 64 on Waitangi Day.
Rowland's birdie blitz in a club round last Saturday was made up of nine birdies, six pars and three bogeys.
His first nine of 30 (four under par) was made up of seven threes, a four and a five. The second nine of 32 included five three, three fours and a five.
Add to that tally his stats from Waitangi and his last 36 holes at Fitzroy have netted a staggering 15 birdies, 17 pars and four bogeys.
