Kinloch's Graham O'Grady smashed the men's record on his way to victory in the New Plymouth half ironman in Taranaki today.

O'Grady won in 4h03m - 10 minutes clear of last year's champion Brodie Madgwick from Auckland with Rotorua's Simon Cochrane a close third after a fast finish on the run.

It was O'Grady's fifth win of the summer after victories in the Tinman triathlon (Tauranga), the Taupo half ironman, the Rotorua triathlon and the Tauranga half ironman.

Cambridge triathlete Candice Hammond made it a hat-trick of wins in the women's race.

The winner of the inaugural event in 2011 and again last year dominated from start to finish. Her winning time of 4h36m was a record for the course.

Second was Hamilton's Erin Furness, who like Hammond, is trained by Cambridge's Keegan Williams.

The New Plymouth race involved a 2km swim, a 90km bike and a 21.1km run.
