Baxter takes two seconds off own record

New Plymouth's Matt Baxter lowered his own Taranaki men's 19 years 1500m record by two seconds at the annual Porritt Classic open grade track and field meeting in Hamilton on Saturday.

Baxter finished eighth overall in a time of 3 minutes 50.44 seconds. The performance ranks him second in New Zealand in his grade.

Zoe Hobbs, competing against the senior women, finished fourth in both the 200m (25.18sec) and long jump (5.60m).

Hobbs also placed sixth in the 100m in 12.17sec.

Matthew Coad leapt 12.26m to take third in the triple jump, while Emily Roughan ran a personal best by eight seconds to take sixth in the 1500m in 4min 31.87sec.

Kyle Van der Merwe was second in the shot put (15.55m) and discus (38.84m) and third in the javelin (53.69m).
