B grade rider Vaughan Smith opened Cycling New Plymouth's road racing season with a win in the mass start sealed handicap race on Saturday.

 All five grades tried in vain to hang on as long as possible to the A grade riders to help finish inside the time limits, Smith putting up the best fight to claim victory on time from Jason Thomason and Denay Cottam.
