Sibling rivalry on the line in finals clash
There's some rivalry going onMURRAY HILLS
There's some sibling rivalry going on in the Burkitt household.
Sisters Jessica and Nicky will be at opposite ends of the turf when they square off in the Taranaki secondary schools' A grade hockey final in Stratford tonight.
And with both goalkeepers, bragging rights are sure to come into the equation.
Older sister Jessica, 17, is in year 13 at New Plymouth Girls' High School and she plays for the Blue team. Nicky, 13, is in year nine and she plays for the Red team.
"There's a difference in age, but not attitude," said their mother Linda. "Both are very competitive . . . especially the younger one."
Linda said she would take both girls down to Stratford.
"My husband Graeme will hopefully join us down there. He can bring one of the girls home, I'll bring the other one. We'll separate them. It's all good clean competition."
Linda said the two teams had played each other twice.
"It's one each. It's all-on tomorrow night. It will be close. Sven's [coach Sven Slager] has done a fantastic job. He's been great."
Slager said he was standing back for the final.
"I've got a couple of ex-players, uni students, who are looking after the teams. I'll stand in the middle," he said yesterday. "They're two evenly matched teams. It could go either way."
The two university students are Ruby Fraser and Tasmin Jury.
In semifinal play last week, the Blue team beat Stratford High School 3-2 and the Red team beat Sacred Heart Girls' College 2-1, both come from behind victories.
The Blue and the Red teams are made up of players from the school's first XI which heads to Nelson on Saturday for the Marie Fry secondary schoolgirls' tournament.
Six games will be played tonight, with games at Stratford and at the Devon Hotel Turf in New Plymouth.
The boys' A final is between Boys' High White and Stratford High School, with the mixed final between Waitara High School and Hawera High School.
Girls' High under-15s claimed the bottom four final by default from Hawera.
On Tuesday, the B grade finals were played with Girls' High winning 2-1 against St Mary's Diocesan School. In the playoff for third, Girls' High Boarders beat Sacred Heart Girls' College Red 3-0.
In the boys' competition, New Plymouth Boys' High School Boarders beat Boys' High Development 6-1 in the top four, B final. In the bottom-four final, Opunake High School beat Inglewood High School 9-2, with Boys' High Yellow 6-2 winners over Boys' High Niger in the playoff for third in the bottom four.
