Top New Zealand surfer Paige Hareb continued her solid start to the World Tour with a ninth placing at the latest event in Western Australia today.

On a busy day Hareb surfed three heats before bowing out to Australian Laura Enever at the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro.

Hareb lost a tight fourth round battle 7.80 to 7.60 with a place in the quarter-finals up for grabs.

Hareb earned US$9500 (NZ$11,500) for her efforts as well as 3300 invaluable ranking points.

Backing up a ninth placing from the season-opening contest in Queensland last month, Hareb should remain in the world's top 10 when the eventual winner is crowned.

Organisers pushed on with the women's event at the famous reef today despite fluky conditions.

Hareb started the day well, edging Pauline Ado in their second round heat to eliminate the French surfer.

The Taranaki surfer then finished third in a tight three-women third round heat won by in-form South African Bianca Buitendag with Aussie Sally Fitzgibbons just getting the better of Hareb for second.

That put Hareb into an elimination heat against Enever where the average wave score was just 3.85.

The quarter-final line-up sees Steph Gilmore (Aus) against Courtney Conlogue (US), Carissa Moore (Haw) vs Malia Manuel (Haw), Tyler Wright (Aus) vs Enever, and Buitendag against Fitzgibbons.

Hareb now switches her attention to the third of 10 contests, the Rip Curl Pro at Bells beach in Victoria starting April 16.

Is Ma'a Nonu returning to the Hurricanes ...

A great move, he's still world class

Okay for one season, but no more

Depriving a more deserving player of a contract

Great for the All Blacks but of no use to Canes

Hmmm, I'll vote in 12 months' time
