Seven Taranaki swimmers will compete at the New Zealand open swimming championships in Auckland next week.

The swimmers, for the champs from Tuesday through to Friday, are: Ryan Cooper (Stratford), Aliena Wallis (Hawera), D'Ani Allen, Julian Weir, Charlotte Webby, Eliot Lundon-Moore and Daniel Bell (all Aquabladz New Plymouth).

The champs are the trials for the Commonwealth Games and the Pan Pacific championships.

Taranaki has two swimmers selected for the new Swimming New Zealand "Pathway to Podium" initiative, which is sponsored by Sport NZ. The two are Weir, 18, and Lundon-Moore, 16.

They had to be eligible for the Youth Pinnacle events (World Youth Olympics and Junior Pan Pacific championships) and be within 3 per cent of the qualifying times for the Junior Pan Pacs. They are on the programme for the next three years.

Aquabladz coach Sue Southgate has been selected as one of six New Zealand coaches for the Pathway to Podium performance coach programme.

The finals sessions of the open champs will be televised live on Sky each evening, from Tuesday to Friday from 7pm.

A great move, he's still world class

Okay for one season, but no more

Depriving a more deserving player of a contract

Great for the All Blacks but of no use to Canes

Hmmm, I'll vote in 12 months' time
