Hawera's Robert Steele was one of only two of 18 starters who progressed to a jump-off in the horse grand prix at the two-star Taranaki Showjumping Group's show at Hawera on Sunday.

Steele, riding Gospel, was first to go and set a cracking pace, leaving all rails in place.

Whakatane's Melanie Purcell rose to the challenge, riding Billistic. She flew home just under a second ahead of Steele to take the win.

In the young rider competition, two riders made it through to the jump-off, one being Oakura'a Mathew Dickey on Kiwi Guard.

But Bridget Hansen, of Hawke's Bay, on Cortaflex Ocean Beach, took time honours riding a brilliant clear round.

Dickey set a ripping pace for her to follow, but paid for his speed with a rail.
