Air New Zealand will jettison Microsoft software used to manage its websites in favour of an open source content management system developed by Wellington firm SilverStripe.

Air New Zealand development manager David Shepherd says the airline was looking for a low-cost solution that was only as complex as it needed to be, "future proofed", and if possible locally developed.

The airline previously used Microsoft's CMS 2002 software to manage its websites, which process ticket sales worth well over $1 billion a year.

SilverStripe's software was selected to run the website for the United States Democrats' National Convention last year. Chief marketing officer Sigurd Magnusson says it has bucked the downturn to hire more than a dozen staff this year, taking its work force to 34.

Air New Zealand selected its software after a "very thorough evaluation", he says.
