A convicted spammer has shot and killed his wife and daughter, then committed suicide, after escaping from prison in the US.

Another daughter who survived the attack told how her father, spammer Eddie Davidson, lured the family into a vehicle with promises of a gift and final goodbye, before opening fire, the Associated Press reported.

After murdering his 29-year-old wife and 3-year-old daughter, Davidson then killed himself.

He was on the run after escaping from a minimum security prison last week, where he was serving a 21-month sentence for racking up US$3.5 million (NZ$4.7 million) in earnings by falsifying email header information.

The 16-year-old daughter who survived said her father fired at her as she ran away, with the shot grazing her neck. A seven-month-old boy also survived, found strapped into the vehicle's back seat.
