Orcon has come up tops in the latest survey of Kiwi internet speeds.

The state-owned internet provider boasted an average download speed of 5.2 megabits per second in the survey of 12,000 computers, the New Zealand Herald reported.

TelstraClear came next with 3.5Mbps, followed by Vodafone and Telecom.

The two top telcos also performed badly in a recent Consumer NZ survey on broadband performance and customer service.

The survey found internet providers that promised low speeds generally delivered more than their guarantees, while services promising 4Mbps generally provided those speeds, NZ Herald said.

Faster plans tended not to deliver their maximums.

The survey was conductd by the NZ Herald and Epitiro Technologies, and used software installed on respondents' computers.
