Dotcom to play Santa in Xmas show
Kim Dotcom will ditch law suit for a Santa suit when he performs in an Auckland theatre company's Christmas play.
The Megaupload founder will play Santa Claus in The Basement Theatre's aptly named Mega Christmas.
Both Dotcom and the theatre announced the news on Twitter this morning.
''I'm Santa in the #MegaChristmas play at The Basement. The funniest Xmas play ever,'' Dotcom tweeted.
The Basement had already assembled a star-studded cast for the production including Shane Cortese, Kimberley Crossman, Jacinda Ardern and Siobhan Marshall, but began a social media campaign to lure Dotcom.
Last Friday it appeared to be paying off with Dotcom starting to follow the company on Twitter.
"We had actually given up hope," said Sophie Henderson, from The Basement Theatre.
"Dotcom was always the dream star of the production. Even before we got people to write the show, we wanted him as Santa, because he's a modern-day Santa. He's what Santa would look like if he owned a private plane and a pimping house."
The writer/director team of Nic Sampson and Barnaby Fredric met Dotcom as he turned on the Franklin Rd Christmas lights on Saturday.
They said the Internet tycoon got in touch on Monday after he had read, and loved, the script, telling them "this stuff is hilarious, count me in".
Mega Christmas tells the story of Santa's disappearance following "a messy North Pole work party".
A cast of odd-ball characters start the hunt to find the big man before Christmas Day is ruined.
The show opens at The Basement Theatre on December 12.
