2012 wasn't a good year for gaming according to review aggregation site Metacritic.

The site reports that just 14 console games and 18 games overall scored 90 or higher in 2012, down from 23 console titles and 32 overall hitting 90 or above in 2011.

That gives 2012 the lowest number of 90+ scoring games since 2009, when year-end totals were first calculated.

Across all platforms, The Walking Dead on Xbox 360 topped the charts with a Metascore of 95, followed by Persona 4 Golden on the PlayStation Vita (94), Mass Effect 3 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 (93), and Journey on the PlayStation 3 (92).

The average Metascore for PC games was 70.3, up from 70.0 in 2011. Its top exclusive games were
Guild Wars 2 (90), Thirty Flights of Loving (89), Torchlight II and Diablo III (both 88), and Football Manager (86).

The average Metascore for PlayStation 3 games was 70.3, up from 69.5 in 2011. Its top exclusive games were Journey (92), Dyad (83), The Unfinished Swan (79), Retro/Grade (78), and Starhawk (77).

The average Metascore for Xbox 360 games was 69.5, up from 68.5 in 2011. Its top exclusive games were Trials Evolution (90), Fez (89), Halo 4 (87), Dance Central 3 (86), and Forza Horizon (85).

The average Metascore for the Wii was 67.9 and 68.6 for the Wii U. The top Wii/Wii U exclusive games were Xenoblade Chronicles (92), Rhythm Heaven Fever (83), New Super Mario Bros U (84), The Last Story (80), and Nintendo Land (77).
