New iPods day: Best bets

Last updated 11:46 01/09/2010

imusicToday is the first day of spring, and with the new season comes the revelation of a new range of products from Apple.

Apart from the onset of more enjoyable weather, September 1 is also Random Act of Kindness Day.

The abundance of punditry has taken a lot of the randomness out of this announcement, but no one can be completely certain what to expect.

As for kind... well... I guess we'll have to wait and see if Apple will be kind to their faithful followers.

There's no shortage of predictions on what to expect from the Wednesday event. Apple, predictably, is giving little away.

We do know that Apple's autumn (or spring for us) event has consistently been about music. The invites received by the tech press feature a guitar with an Apple-shaped sound hole, which further affirms that.

I don't think I could handle playing that guitar, Appleby or not.

Anyway, here's a summary of the best bets for new iPods day - make sure to give us your opinion at the bottom.

Favourites:

A new iPod touch with dual cameras for Facetime, styling similar to the iPhone 4 and a new, high-resolution display. This is the hot favourite, as the iPod touch has been updated each year at this event, following along with the iPhone.

Increases in storage capacity across the range - pretty much a given.

A new iPod Nano in a square shape, featuring a touchscreen interface. This one is prompted by revelations that several Chinese companies are reportedly already making cases for them - that's a pretty small touchscreen, don't you think?

Very few changes, if any, to the iPod Classic and Shuffle, except for increases in capacity. Poor old Classic - some are saying it should be discontinued. Mine is on its last legs.

A new Apple TV device which is much smaller - in size and capacity. Some say it will coincide with a shift towards streamed content over locally stored files.

Outsiders:

A 7-inch iPad. Many have predicted a smaller iPad, but something tells me it won't be today.

A revamped iLife suite. Not impossible, some are saying that iTunes will get a touch up so the rest of the suite might follow.

Cloud-based file management in iTunes. Take your music anywhere, etc. I think rights issues might get in the way of this one.

iOS 4 for iPad. Doubted by some who say the iPad would struggle with the memory requirements of multi-tasking.

Apple are thought to be busy negotiating with media companies to put together a rental service for TV series through iTunes, but it is unlikely to be ready just yet.

What do you think? Any predictions? What would you like to see, ideally? What is the last Apple music product you bought, and why?

Steve Jobs will shed his skin to reveal his true reptilian form, start spitting fireballs and go on a rampage?

I predict Apple will continue to focus on 'user experience' rather than actually push the limits of technology and it's fanbase/followers will buy whatever comes it way. If Apple were to create a device which could be controlled by inserting it rectally, I'm sure the fanbois and gurls would still by it.

The real WOW factor will be introducing 3G data capability into the itouch, basically a slimmed down iPad but with better functionality (read portability) for business users. This then would become the best PDA on the market, for those that either don't want an iPhone/Smartphone or don't want all their important data sitting on their phone.

The last apple I bought was a golden delicious. I probably enjoyed it more than any Apple products. I am not a fan of Quicktime (or Safari or Bonjour or all the other rubbishware it comes with), and I find iTunes for NZ to be totally pointless. The end result is that I won't even look at other Apple products.

Are the insignificant improvement to these items of greater need than fixing of major iPhone 4 issues?

one prediction: a smaller ipod touch "mini" or "Slim" will replace the entry level 8GB model.

a couple of disagreements with the articles predictions:

1. an increase in ipod touch capacities is not actually that likely - in the last 12 months flash memory prices have not dropped at all, so there is unlikely to be an increase on the largest 64GB model already offered. This fact might in turn save the ipod classic from death for 1 more year.

2. iOS 4 for ipad was confirmed months ago by apple - this isn't a rumour, they said it would be available in the "Fall" (our spring) - only question is when, not if.

multitasking and IOS 4 almost defintely for IPAD rental service to debut with renewed I TV box devices? HTML 5 engine update for Iphone 4 / IPAD some new colours an increased price across range and more worker suicides at the factory

Increases to Ipod Touch capacity? Hmmmm I'm not sure that's a given. 128GB of flash memory might still be a bit too expensive. And that's also if they can cram in all those memory chips too - Apple wasn't able to shoehorn 64GB into the Iphone.

A smaller iPad? That's been around for a while - it's called an iPod Touch ;-)

@iName

I think Apply will only rectify the Iph 4 problems with the release of a new model. The reception issue some people get can only be fixed with a redesign of the handset. Expect that to happen and the Iphone 4.5 to be released within a few months. Maybe with a 64GB edition.

Scott, you should have added Itunes for Windows to that list. It's shocking how bloated and buggy it is. You would think Apple engineers would try and make it perfect in order to show Windows users how nice and smooth their products are....but nope.
