Time to get (Wii) fit

Last updated 11:40 13/03/2008

wiifit.jpgWhether it will actually get you fit or not is another matter, but Nintendo's Wii Fit will land in New Zealand on May 8.

A huge hit in Japan, selling more than 1 million copies in the first month it was on sale there, Wii Fit comes bundled with a motion-sensitive peripheral called the balance board and has more than 40 exercises involving balance games, yoga, muscle workouts and aerobic exercises.

And there's more good news for Kiwi Nintendo fans: Mario Kart Wii will arrive on April 24, bundled with the Wii Wheel. If you don't fancy using the wheel, you can also use the Wii remote turned sideways; a Wii remote and Nunchuk combination; a classic Nintendo controller or a Gamecube controller. Mario Kart Wii has 16 classic race tracks from Nintendo 64, Nintendo DS, Super Nintendo and even Gameboy Advance version of the game, as well as 16 spectacular new race tracks and 10 battle arenas.

While NZ has sometimes been slow in getting key Nintendo releases, this time we get these two titles before the United States. Are you Nintendo fans excited?

I can't see it working here... most people use games as a form of escape or fun. The Wii is fun and a bit of a work out - the boxing etc - but really I would rather be on my mountain bike or playing squash to really keep in shape. Maybe it's the lack of out door space in Japan or the Kooky nature of there games but I just don't get it. P rapper the rapper etc were great. But jumping around with a controling in my hand to get fit... Nah.

What's next ? Maybe people could go to the gym, play some sport or maybe even get some fresh air and go for a walk.

WiiFit will barely register here. Nintendo have never been popular in NZ. With respect to nextgen gaming, we kiwis are being left behind somewhat as a consequence of our Nintendo neglect. I will definitely be getting this one however, and you can be assured, it will sell like hotcakes worldwide, perhaps the biggest game this year - I kid you not.
