MGS4: a game or an interactive movie?

Last updated 11:54 18/06/2008

mgs4.jpgMetal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots landed at Game Junkie towers last week, and although never a fan of the series, I was interested to see whether the rumours about 90 minute cutscenes was, in fact, true.

Well, after about the first 20 minutes of game time (not including the mandatory 8 minute install to the PS3's hard disk which features a chain-smoking Solid Snake in the background and health warnings about smoking), I'm not sure whether MGS4 is a video game or an interactive movie. The first 20 minutes seemed to be walk 20 paces, watch a cutscene, move another 20 paces, watch a cutscene. So, the cutscenes are long and plenty, but I don't think any approach the rumoured 90 minutes.

Now don't get  me wrong, I love sitting through most game cutscenes and MGS4's are gorgeous to look at, but when I play a game, I want to play the game, I don't want to watch movies most of the time then just control the character briefly. If I wanted to watch a movie, I'll just rent a DVD. And don't get me started about games that don't let you "bypass" the cutscenes.

For me, game cutscenes should move the story along  but they shouldn't dominate the precedings. Good examples of cutscenes from games  I've played recently include Lego Indiana Jones: the original adventures, GTAIV, Grim Fandango and The Bourne Conspiracy.

So, what's your take on in-game cutscenes and do you watch them or just "bypass" them? What game has the best cutscenes you've seen?

Come on man, what would Wing Commander have been without the cutscenes? Mark Hamill's gotta eat!

I thought that the cut seens were well done and added to the game to display the info,If you were an Metal Gear nooby would wouldnt have an idea of whats going on. I normaly watch the cut scences in games if its bad or a repeat of the same old thing I will nuke it. The game with its detail is awesome and uses the PS3 power for a change, the problem with me is would rather shoot a bullet in there head than put them to sleep or take my time sneaking around them. Has anyone played the Metal Gear online ?..it took me 20 minutes to sign in choose two names with passwords that were more detailed than most bank sites, then to find out everyone had a bigger gun than me...lol

It is a fact of life that everyone has a bigger gun than you. I was most disappointed at the start of my online COD 4 gaming to find everyone had kick ass weapons/addons and i didnt. Now im rank 55 the shoe is on the other foot muahahaha!

Im of a similar mind to most of you guys in that cut scenes that add to the storyline are cool, but you MUST be able to bypass them at will imo.

I played Indiana jones lego the other day too and thought it was a good example! Most of those cut scenes just straight out made me LOL

This is Hideo Kojima's swansong from Metal Gear, and since he's always blended cinematic cutscenes with actual gameplay, it's not surprising that he's pushed it to the limit with this game. Still, you'd have to be a hardcore MGS fan to sit through a cutscene over an hour long (and yes, the final cutscene is supposed to be a mammoth one).

Go play the other MGS games first, then play this one. If you don't fully understand the story, then of course you won't want to see much of the cut scenes. For me personally, I like to watch the cut scenes, because they build up the MGS story (which is really awesome).

Most of my games are sports orientated, so I don't get too many cutscenes. I do however get 6 - 12 voiceovers before they start repeating themselves which gets annoying The original Stacey Jones rugby was great in its voiceovers. They were so crap it was hilarious. "JONES! hands it off to PRICE! hands it off to JONES!"

I hear you Naly D.

Hows about jonah lomu rugby? you hear the same three lines every few seconds! "He's digging like a demented mole"!!!

At the risk of going off topic, why could they never make a good rugby game after Jonah's? Everyone since has just been pants.

I enjoy the cut scenes too in games although when you have seen them a dozen times before and you can't skip them is the pits. But the bright side is you know roughly how long they are so you know how long you have to go to the bathroom, make a coffee etc etc - so you can use them as pauses.

I'm not really interested in the new MGS. I played the last one, it was ok. Kinda "Meh" if you ask me. So I might hire it, have a crack and then leave it with this one

Man tell me about it. Im playing MSG4 and its like watching a long as movie with these cutscenes lol. Only last night I realised by pressing the start button you can skip it. But its all good i love the weapons and add ons.

Cutscenes are great additions to games but game designers should make them skippable or provide a menu option for toggling them on/off.

I never got caught up in the MGS series; what is it that makes it so great?
