Your platform of choice

Last updated 12:41 27/07/2009

joystickIs cost a factor when it comes to owning a specific gaming format, or do you own a particular format for other reasons?

I ask this because browsing through past comments, there's been great points raised about the pros and cons of, say, owning a PS3 console or an Xbox 360 console, so today I'd be interested in finding out what the split is of Game Junkie readers who own an Xbox 360, PS3, Wii or PC, and why you own the format you do.

Personally, I'm more of a console gamer now mainly because of the convenience of playing in front of the TV, sitting on the couch, and also because I just can't afford to constantly upgrade my ageing PC so it can play the latest and greatest games at their maxium graphical resolutions. However, I still use my PC to game on from time to time when I want to play one of my favourite PC titles.

But why do you play on the gaming machine you do: is the cost of the hardware a major factor when deciding on what gaming format you favour? Is it because a specific game series only appears on one particular format? Did you decide on your format of choice because you're predominantly an online gamer and its online service is superior to any other offerings? Do you absolutely hate joypads and believe games, especially first-person shooters, need to be played with keyboard and mouse?

While my flatmate has just about every console under the sun I mostly game on my PC. The main reason I haven't played much on the Xbox or Playstation is because, over 20 years, I've become very familiar with PC gaming and prefer to play first person shooters. In short, I suck at console shooters.

Fortunately I have a newish computer but perhaps I'll consider branching out once that gets a bit too old to run the latest games.

*Braces for war*

The main reason I waited for the PlayStation 3 is probably my brand loyalty to the games (and developers) that appear exclusively on Sony's platforms. If I want to play the new Gran Turismo, God of War, or play the new franchises that Naughty Dog and Insomniac make... I have to have a PS3.

I mainly game on PC but for consoles, I've got an Xbox 360. Why that over a PS3? Initially price. However, now that the PS3 has come down in price I would consider one, but there are very few games on it that would make the investment worth it.

Infamous, Metal Gear Solid and Resistance are the only 3 I can think of. Several hundred dollars of console for 3 games hardly seems worth it.

I initially got a Wii due to brand loyalty thing. Ive always somewhat disliked the playstation brand and loved nintendo brand (but the fact they were quite cheap compared to everything at the time possibly helped)

I remember when my friends were all foaming over playstation when they came out and i didnt even bother with it, got a N64 which none of them even cared about and thrived for years, Ocarina of time was the ultimate. Playstation has nothing on games/series like Zelda. Ive always been nintendo orientated (although i do have a ps3 in my house, which does get its fair share of play from me E.g. killzone2 online)

But i wouldnt say cost affects my choice of console/game type machine. I just get what i want (and cost just determines how long it is before i can get it)

PS3 over xbox 360, simply because of the hardware reliability and much like Ben #2, the games that are exclusive to PS3. The RROD issue on an xbox360 and the fact you have to buy certain things as extras that come standard with ps3, e.g. battery packs, you have to have an external HDD for xbox, and the logical thing of the fact that you actually cant use every button on an xbox controller at the same time, whereas ps3, you can. The one thing i feel sony is severely killing themselves with is online content, xbox arcade is incredibly more advanced than the sony online store is. And as for singstar and buzz, well sony was on to a good thing. lips and scene it dont quite compare.

PC all the way. There's just no way to be semi decent at an FPS or RTS with a gamepad - someone with a keyboard and mouse will always triumph. Plus console games are a lot more expensive. Without an HDTV, console games will never look as good as a PC with a decent monitor.

For me, its an equal mix of PC/Xbox360. Just look at the support for a game such as, say, Team Fortress 2. X360 gamers still have yet to get any of the new modes/maps/class updates etc that Valve has poured on the PC community, so for that particular game its a no-brainer. For MMO's, PC wins out everytime. I've been PC'ing alot lately because Ive been getting into Eve Online and rediscovering WoW. For action-adventure type games, I think consoles have the edge. I was on the fence about what platform to buy Fallout3 for, and plumped for the console just because I wanted a bigger screen and better sound for immersion. But PC Fallout3 gamers can enjoy a plethora of mods to expand their game. In the end, I think consoles win out for accessibility and immersion, PC's for range and personalisation. PS3 I use for Blu-Ray ;)

I used to play on PC a bit, but for me now it's solely Xbox 360. PC's just get frustrating with the endless need to update hardware and drivers etc., not to mention the endless supply of bugs. I got a 360 over PS3 partly because of price but mainly because of game selection when I got it a couple of years ago (Halo 3 and Mass Effect were the big drawcards at the time). Even now, most PS3 titles just don't interest me aside from Infamous and Resistance ... the only one that would really have twisted my arm would be Tekken 6 and that's cross-platform now.

PC for FPS and most gaming. I find the console controllers too unweildy for fast movement.

I do a lot of non-gaming work on my PC's so it's worth the money I have invested in them.

I do like RPGs on the PS2 and am still up in the air over an XBox or a PS3 (one has a BluRay player the other has a better selection of games...)
